Frequently Asked Questions

1. What should I do if I see someone smoking within a Breathe Easy Zone?
Kindly inform the person that out of respect for faculty and students with asthma or emphysema, smoking is not permitted inside of the Breathe Easy Zone, and direct the person to the designated smoking area.

2. Can I only smoke in Designated Smoking Areas?
No. As long as you are 20-50 feet outside of buildings with Breathe Easy Zones, you may smoke. However, please dispose of your cigarette butts in appropriate ash urns.

3. How do I know if I’m 20-50 feet away from the building?
The average length of a person’s stride is 2.5 feet. This would be 8 – 20 paces away from the building.

4. Where can I smoke if it’s raining?
Please be respectful of others and wait until the rain has stopped before smoking outside of a building with a Breathe Easy Zone.

5. How do I know if a building has a Breathe Easy Zone?
Check out the Breathe Easy Zone map. Look for Breathe Easy Zone window clings in the entrances to buildings.

6. How can a student get more involved?
Join STRIKE! STRIKE is a group of peer health educators that work to prevent students from using tobacco and provide assistance for those that want to quit through increased awareness about tobacco and its harmful effects. Both smokers and non-smokers are welcome. Go to STRIKE's Web site for more information.

7. How can I quit smoking?
