How do I start my own program?

Breathe Easy Initiative - from adoption to successful implementation

Adoption

  1. Faculty/staff must agree on the adoption of a Breathe Easy Zone for their building, and contact person(s) for the implementation of this policy appointed for the building. Please feel free to consult with Kevin Frentz about successful approaches used by the participating buildings.
  2. Contact Kevin Frentz to schedule a building walk-through to determine Breathe Easy Zone range, location of Designated Smoking Area, and cost (if any) involved.
  3. Submit Breathe Easy Letter of Commitment to Kevin Frentz. Form template may be found online at www.breatheeasy.fsu.edu.

Provisions

  1. Determine number of Breathe Easy window clings needed and request these from Kevin Frentz. Cling installation instructions may be found online at www.breatheeasy.fsu.edu.
  2. Order Designated Smoking Area ash urn and any optional supplies from Laurie Thomas (see Materials Available form).
  3. Contact David MacManus to have ash urns moved outside of your building’s Breathe Easy Zone, to have cigarette butts cleaned from around the building, and/or to have mulch installed at the Designated Smoking Area.

Implementation

The success of this policy will depend on the awareness of students, faculty, and staff utilizing your building. The following is a list of ideas on how to inform students, faculty, and staff of the Breathe Easy Initiative, and is not meant to be exhaustive.

  1. Inform faculty and staff who work in your building about the new policy and Breathe Easy Zone through emails, newsletters, and/or a staff meeting.
  2. Strongly encourage an announcement about Breathe Easy Zone in classes.
  3. STRIKE students (tobacco peer health educators) and Kevin Frentz are available to make presentations for classes or staff meetings.
  4. Place a statement about the new policy and Breathe Easy Zone in each class syllabus.
  5. A template for cards with a brief message about Breathe Easy may be requested from Kevin Frentz as a less confrontational way of informing smokers who are in violation of the policy.
  6. Inform faculty, staff, and students about the Smoking Cessation Program and nutrition counseling at Thagard Student Health Center for those concerned about gaining weight if they stop smoking.
  7. Increase awareness that carelessly discarded cigarette butts are litter. Some buildings have temporary signage encouraging people to keep their building and its surroundings clean and litter-free.

Follow-up

In three months you will receive a follow-up survey to assess the advancement of your building’s adoption of your Breathe Easy Zone. In the meantime, please feel free to contact Kevin Frentz with any concerns or problems.
